What is Kintsukuroi?

Kintsukuroi is a Japanese word that means: “to repair with gold.”  The art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer and understanding that it is more beautiful for having been broken.

When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold.  They believe that when something’s suffered mutilation and has a history, it becomes more beautiful.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.” – Ernest Hemingway
